Dumpyards and the other

Dumpyards

Garbage collected from each point, travels a distance to reach its destination, i.e. the dump yard.  The most appropriate place to dispose of the city's waste lies in the outskirts, away from the residential places. Seegehalli, Kannahalli and Bellahalli are some of the few functioning dump yards but thanks to the growing industrialization the places meant for collection of tons of garbage are currently flooding with houses, forming a gulf between the BBMP and the residents.

A portion of the city's wet waste is disposed of at Seegehalli and Kannahalli, situated off Magadi main road. Receiving all kinds of waste until two years ago, both the places are currently receiving wet waste alone which is further converted into manure for agricultural purposes. They each receive approximately 20 trucks of garbage per day, weighing around 60 tons in total.

The rejected waste, after segregation, gets buried once every four years at Seegehalli and burnt off on a regular basis at the Kannahalli dump yard. The landfill at Kannahalli dump yard is still under construction and the smoke emitting from the plants of both dump yards are now a cause of trouble to the nearby residents, whose concerns are yet to be met.

The city's dry waste is partially disposed of at Bellahalli, near Yelahanka, which has been functioning regularly for the past two and a half years now. Mixed and rejected waste is sent back for proper segregation. The landfill witnesses an up and down of about 300 trucks in action. All the dry waste collected is mud packed and buried underground, remaining silent on the recycling issue.

The Other

Speaking of responsibilities, it appears diluted with both the counterparts. Each area has its own, common spot to dump and the main targets of such actions remain the centers of the city like Majestic, K R market, Shivajinagar etc. Around 15 small trucks collect mixed, road waste from Majestic each day, where segregation becomes the main hurdle.

Heaps of mixed garbage is a common sight at K R market and Shivajinagar, which not only affects the health of people working there, but also their businesses. "Only because we sell our meat through the wholesale market, there is little profit, " says a shopkeeper who is troubled by the garbage heap at Shivajinagar. He also complains that he has lost many of his customers due to the hygiene issue because of the dump yard.

"Irrespective of daily clearing up of garbage from streets and dump yards, customers and shopkeepers continue to dump waste on streets," expresses BBMP worker at the K R market.

To break this vicious cycle of blame game on garbage disposal, both the parties have equal stands to take. Beginning from particular smaller areas to the larger yards, sorting out of the dumping sites requires meticulous attention from both the BBMP and the residents.
